Estonian Shoes

I was looking for something to embellish this blue pair of shoes, but couldn't find anything appropriate. Ribbon wouldn't handle the curves well, and I didn't have any bias tape or edging on hand and didn't feel like making any. Then I remembered embroidery.

It's been years since I've done embroidery, but I pulled out the "encyclopedia of stitches" or some such book I got from my mother, and looked for inspiration. I decided to keep it simple and do a chain stitch.

I tried using laces with these, but it didn't look quite right. So I decided to try elastic. It'll be easier to get the shoes on William since he doesn't necessarily like to hold his foot still long enough for me to tie them. It remains to be seen if he'll be able to yank these shoes off or not. He's sleeping now, so I'll test them tomorrow.

I'm calling these "Estonian Shoes" because the embroidery book mentioned something about the traditional outfits over there having fine embroidery on them. This'll be close enough for our purposes.
