Place Order and Hope For the Best

I got a really cute photo of W out in the snow today, and I just now placed my order for Christmas cards. The past few years I was pretty good about getting that done in advance, but it looks like that was more of an aberration than a new trend, since this is more typical.

I had intended on just ordering the same simple photo cards like I usually get, because previously I'd been able to pick them up in town the day after I ordered them. But this year (just my luck, the year I'm running late) that doesn't seem to be an available option, so rather than try to figure out where else I could place an order online and pick up cards in a store, I just opted for home delivery. I can't see out the window now, but as of sunset it was still snowing-- if it continues to snow all night, there's no telling when I'd be able to drive into town anyway, and at least with home delivery all I have to do is make it to the mailbox and I can pick up the cards to address them. I might even have enough stamps here that I could mail them from home, too.

I'm still optimistic that I'll be able to have the cards postmarked before Christmas, at any rate, and most of them are going out to the east coast and so should only take a day or two in transit, so best case the recipients should get them Christmas eve, worst case it'll still be before New Year's.

We'll probably get another "official" family photo next year, and with a photo selected before December rolls around, I should be back on track for 2011. I was so dejected this afternoon when I discovered that my order wouldn't be filled immediately that I briefly considered just not sending out cards this year, but it didn't take long to realize that was an overly dramatic reaction to a minor disappointment. So maybe they'll be late, it's not that big a deal in the long run. People tell me throughout the year that they really do like getting the cards, so they'll probably still like them after Christmas, too. I know I'm still happy to get cards after Christmas, I don't take them down until later in January at the earliest. Actually, I just took down the 2009 cards last night, to make room for the 2010 cards. My nativity scene is still on the mantel, too.

The Christmas tree is on the front porch, but I think we'll put that up tonight now that W is asleep.
