  Staying at Shade

I went ahead and booked our hotels in LA. We'll stay at the Westin Bonaventure Wed & Thurs nights since that's the usual hotel Terry stays at when visiting this particular customer. I was there last September, it's nice. And it's a Starwood hotel so we usually get upgraded to a suite or club level or whatever they've got available (T's got a lot of "points" on that hotel club card). It caters to business travelers, but I recommend it if you've got to be in downtown LA on business. It's pool isn't all that, it's bar/restaurant scene is lousy by NYC or LA standards, it's not particularly convenient to good shopping, restaurants, etc. But if you're just going there for business, it's great.

Shade I haven't been to before. I actually first made reservations at the Viceroy in Santa Monica (for Friday thru Sunday, on our own dime since Terry's expense account expires Friday at 5pm!). We were there in September, I enjoyed my stay. Stay there if you like more of your tabloid-style LA "scene".

But then I was looking at what else was available, and came across the hotel Shade in Manhattan Beach. It's several blocks from the beach, but that doesn't bother us, it's not a long walk and I can only spend an hour or two in the sun anyway since I'm so fair. So we're not carrying coolers, umbrellas, chairs, etc. Just a tote bag with our beach towels. Easy.

We haven't been to Manhattan Beach before, so when I gave Terry his choices (Viceroy or Shade) he was in the mood for something new. So Shade it is. I reserved a room above their patio bar since it was a full $120 less per night than a room on the quiet side. What do we care, the bar closes before midnight, and we don't even get home from dinner before 10pm and don't think about sleep until 1:30 or 2:00am. It'll be earlier for us on the west coast, but whatever. I'm looking forward to it.
